New Team Referee Program
Improving referee coverage of spring games...
Last fall we saw a big jump in the number of U10 to U15 games that were not covered by 3 referees. mvysa shares your concerns for this. The mvysa board has adopted several changes in order to address this situation. One of them is the creation of a Team Referee option.
When a full crew of 3 referees were not present in the past the center referee was asked to get volunteer club linesmen from those attending the game. These club linesmen could only call out of bounds. Many felt this was not a good situation. Starting this spring if a full crew doesn’t show and there is a registered official present or the team has a family member present who is has been registered as a Team Referee then that person or persons will be able to perform the assistant referee duties including calling off sides and get paid. Our hope is that many of our teams will have these Team Referees and thus lower the number of U10-19 games played with less than 3 referees.
In order for a person to become a team referee the family member must take the USSF entry level grade 8 course and obtain a required shirt ($25). We will reimburse them $20 for the course cost and hope that clubs and teams will help the family member/Team Referee with the cost of the required shirt.
The entry level grade 8 course costs $60, there is pre-course online material to cover along with 9 hours of indoor classroom instruction and one 2 hour outdoor session. Dates and sign-up can be found on ossrc.com.
Once the person completes the course work they will be a registered USSF referee and may if they choose officiate games at tournaments. They may also join the local referee association (DASOA) for $40 and officiate select league games. These options would require them to purchase a complete referee uniform.
When possible during the season we will notify the coaches when there will be a need for a Team Referee.
